Registrations Open: Higher Education Summit 2022

From 6-8 September, 2022 the Higher Education Summit 2022 will open its doors in Hasselt, Belgium. Under the theme 'Daring to transform learning for a future-proof economy', the summit will bring together those who wish to transform higher education for the benefit of a 'safe and just space for humanity': people who study, teach, research, and contribute to governance at higher education institutions, and representatives of the business world, government, and civil society.

Online YEA! Global Summit

Registrations are currently open for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Youth and Education Alliance - YEA! Global Summit, to be held on 5 July, 2022. This virtual Global Summit will bring together YEA! partners and the wider higher education community to provide an opportunity for universities and colleges around the world to learn more about YEA!, to get involved in a variety of initiatives to support climate action on campus, and to hear from higher education practitioners, youth and government representatives. 

Hawkesbury-Nepean Waterkeeper Alliance Launched River Report Card

Hawkesbury Waterkeeper Alliance – a partnership under RCE Greater Western Sydney between Western Sydney University, Greater Sydney Local Landcare Services, Streamwatch, Cattai Hills Environment Network, Hawkesbury Environment Network, Hawkesbury Nepean Landcare Network and Greater Sydney Landcare – has released its inaugural 'River Report Card'.

Session at DNC 2022 Explores Different Sector Approaches to Biodiversity Conservation

On 25 May, 2022, UNU-IAS participated in a session at the Dresden Nexus Conference 2022 (DNC 2022), organised by UNU-FLORES, TU Dresden, and the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER). The session, ‘Fostering Collective Action: Mainstreaming Biodiversity Across Sectors’, featured presentations on different sectors’ approaches to biodiversity conservation and restoration in their respective fields.

Webinar: The Impact of Climate Change and Displacement on the Right to Education

UNESCO is organising a webinar on the Impacts of Climate Change and Displacement on the Right to Education in remembrance of two powerful cyclones that hit southeast Asia in May 2019 and May 2020 – climatic catastrophes that displaced millions of people overnight – to stimulate a global dialogue around the impact of climate change and displacement on the right to education. 

Project Neuru Season 2 Orientation Event Held

On 14 May, 2022, RCE Dobong‐gu held a Zoom orientation for the ‘Global ESD Youth Project Neuru Season 2', a project to improve ecological literacy and glocal leadership of domestic and foreign youths. 'Neuru' is a Korean word meaning 'for a long time, not all at once', which could be translated to aiming for sustainable development for youth for a long time.

The conservation of biodiversity has long had a contested relationship with the field of education for sustainable development (ESD). Many scholars have posited that ESD seeks to center anthropogenic systems within an understanding of the biosphere in education initiatives. However, in recent years a more nuanced view of ESD’s role in biodiversity conservation that conceptualises biodiversity conservation and human development initiatives complimenting rather than competing with one another has taken root.
