The 2019 ‘River Angel’ youth water protection program, jointly organised by RCE Hangzhou and the Alibaba Foundation, formally kicked off at Hangzhou Xuejun Elementary School on 5 September, 2019.
Over the Summer, in coordination with local environmental NGO Green Zhejiang, RCE Hangzhou organised 21 Earth Successor study tours with a central theme of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over 1,000 primary and secondary school students participated, travelling to destinations including the United States, the Bahamas, South Korea, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and various provinces within China.
The 9th African RCE Meeting was held in Luyengo, Eswatini from 5th-7th August, 2019 under the theme, 'Accelerating Progress towards the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in Africa'. Hosted by RCE Eswatini, with the support of the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), 92 participants from 16 RCEs across 10 countries in the region attended this year’s meeting.
As the climate emergency takes further hold, migration will be a growing sustainability issue. Developed out of discussions at the European RCE Regional meeting in 2016 hosted by RCE London, the Fresh Start programme supports migrants through ESD initiatives, offering alternative routes into employment and education.
UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) members from around the world will have the opportunity to exchange and discuss effective lifelong learning policies and practices at this year’s International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC), which will take place in MedellÍn, Colombia, from 1 to 3 October, 2019. Earlier this month, UNESCO held the UNESCO Forum on ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) and GCE (Global Citizenship Education), from 2-3 July, 2019, in Hanoi, Vietnam, with the aim to discuss the future of UNESCO's ESD and GCE initiatives under the Education 2030 Agenda between 2020 and 2030.
