RCE Trang is Reorganized to Tackle Current Challenges

After a decade of existence, since its official acknowledgement by UNU in 2007, RCE Trang, Thailand had been admirably active in carrying out ESD/SD activities and its collaborations with other RCEs in the Asia-Pacific region. Recently the RCE’s stakeholders moved to reorganize and strengthen RCE Trang, to broaden the network, and make it more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the communities.

Guiding Principles of the Global RCE Community

In an effort to step up the contributions of the global RCE network beyond the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), and in order to strengthen its capacities towards implementing the SDGS and the priorities of the Global Action Programme on ESD, it is necessary to protect the integrity of the global RCE network and to promote the quality of practice, consistent with the principles of good governance.

RCE Structure and Governance Survey: An Analysis of Results and Recommendations

April 24, 2016 Kim Smith, Jamie Stamberger, and Kyoko Shiota RCE Greater Portland

When RCE Greater Portland formed its regional network in 2013, its coordinators wanted to know if there was an ideal governance structure that Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE) on ESD had discovered. With the current acknowledgement of 146 RCEs by the UNU-IAS around the world, there remains a paucity of research on whether a particular form of governance has been identified as most effective.

RCE Structure and Governance Survey

At the Global RCE Conference, many different organizational structures and governance models of RCEs were discussed. RCE Greater Portland also announced that it had designed a short survey to gather information on the different types of RCE governance, membership, and funding models, in order to collect recommended best practices. They hope that this research will be beneficial for existing and new RCEs, as well as UNU-IAS. Results will be shared with participants who express interest.
