Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
Dobong-gu is one of the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul and is located in the northeastern part of Seoul. The southern part of Dobong-gu is a continuous residential district in Seoul, and the northern part is a mountainous area, and houses are generally concentrated around Dobong-ro, and both sides of the road form a commercial area. As part of the 8th popular election, Dobong is developing its five visions for a better future: 1) convenient transportation and a growing development city, 2) vibrant economy and a city with a promising future, 3) warm companionship and a city that cares for welfare, 4) a life with rest and an attractive cultural city, 5) friendly governance and a city that communicates with empathy.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
This project, based on recommendations from the United Nations University's RCE certification, was initiated in response to the request for educational initiatives in ESD within formal education (education in schools) as an alternative to enhance ESD awareness in Seoul. Dobong-gu has already been engaged in various initiatives that connect the local community through projects like Community Education Collaboratives and Innovative Education Zones. Given this context, there was a strong intention to build upon the intersections of ESD. It was believed that establishing ESD within an educational framework and building an infrastructure would be more crucial than one-time campaigns or projects. Furthermore, there was a desire to create a local community wisdom and knowledge archive in Dobong-gu through the creation of ESD textbooks.

Rationale: 
To facilitate understanding and promote the dissemination of ESD, it was crucial to establish a platform that collects and shares local community’s wisdom, knowledge, and good practice cases in conjunction with the SDGs. In pursuit of this goal, we set up the 'Dobong Wiki' for the creation of ESD textbooks, ensuring that information exchange and archiving take place among local community institutions and citizens.
Objectives: 
Build a wisdom and knowledge, and good practice cases for SDGs archiving in community in Dobong and spreading ESD understanding through the creation of ESD textbooks
Activities and/or practices employed: 
In 2019, upon creating the ESD textbooks for the 1st Edition and providing ESD classes to schools for a year, there arose a need to continually collect, modify, and enhance various pieces of information linked to the local community within the content of the materials. To address this need, teachers and students from schools, along with stakeholders associated with specific sections, have been regularly communicating through platforms like Padlet, KakaoTalk, and social media. They are consistently incorporating evolving local wisdom, knowledge into the materials and creating an archival record. We've named this initiative the "Dobong Wiki," which compiles information that is used for the revision of ESD textbooks. The content covers a diverse range of knowledge types such as history, events, good practice, news, photos, videos, and relevant resource links. For instance, there's an unit of ESD textbooks called "the neck of a sock" for 3~6 graders. For creating this unit, we visited sock factories to take pictures and videos, or even interview individuals involved in the industry, enhancing the completeness of the content (Dobong-gu is a city that produces 40% of socks in Korea). Anyone interested in participating in the creation of ESD textbooks can easily share knowledge or information by accessing an ICT program. The gathered information undergoes review by officials, stakeholders in linked institutions, and experts, and is then incorporated into the revision of ESD textbooks.

Results: 
The ESD textbooks of Dobong-gu stand out from those produced in other RCE cities in that they integrate the wisdom and knowledge of Dobong's local community with exemplary practices, all in alignment with the 17 SDGs. This ESD textbooks gives off a sense similar to that of community textbooks infused with sustainable development goals. Through collaborative efforts between government, private sector, and schools, this self-produced ESD textbooks conveys the message that practicing and taking action toward sustainable development goals is not as challenging as it may seem; one can start from the closest place they are. Furthermore, through the use of ESD textbooks in their lessons, students and teachers gain a better understanding of Dobong-gu. Instructors teaching these lessons also delve deeper into Dobong-gu, and Dobong-gu citizens who contribute their wisdom and knowledge or information to the 'Dobong Wiki' for ESD textbooks creation are making an effort to better understand ESD.
Lessons learned: 
When we began creating the ESD textbooks, local community institutions initially opposed the idea of featuring their own cases in the materials. This was because, being a local government, they feared that showcasing their own exemplary cases might seem like it was done by RCE Dobong -gu. Even within the departments of Dobong District Office, we had internal conflict over this matter. However, we reached out to these institution representatives and stakeholders, explained the intent behind the material creation, and persuaded them until they understood. Three years later, the ESD textbooks are recognized as valuable resources to showcase their institutions and initiatives. They are actively engaged in the 'Dobong Wiki' initiative.
Key messages: 
If you wish to promote ESD within an already established local infrastructure, it's important to design and execute strategic content, much like the ESD textbooks developed by RCE Dobong-gu.
Relationship to other RCE activities: 
Currently, there is no collaboration with other RCE cities, but in the future, we would like to create an international version of the ESD textbook that incorporates the wisdom, knowledge, and information from other cities.
Funding: 
For this project, we utilized the planning budget and executed the budget of Dobong District Office.
