5. Project description
Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.: 

Since 2011, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum has been chairing the Saskatchewan Ecomuseums
Initiative (SEI), alongside a range of provincial and national partners. There were no ecomuseums
in Saskatchewan when the SEI began, but a number of sites are now applying the model. Current
sites include ranching and recreational communities, a low-income urban area with a large First
Nations population, and bedroom communities near the City of Regina. The SEI is helping to
advance ESD because of the links between the ecomuseum model and the tenets of sustainable
development. Ecomuseums are community-driven “museums without walls” that help local residents and other stakeholders preserve and learn from tangible and intangible heritage in its living form. They are based on holistic approaches to community engagement around current cultures, traditions, and other assets, helping people adapt to changes that are affecting their regions.

Description: 
The SEI was initiated in 2011 to explore the potential for ecomuseums in Saskatchewan. Given that interest in the ecomuseum concept appears to be high, and the number of communities that want to work with the model continues to increase, this provincial project has become a central focus of the Human Ecology curatorial program at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. In 2016 the "Newly-Forming Ecomuseums Development Framework" was released (see attached reference materials) and in the Fall of 2016 the Ecomuseums Course at Luther College at the University of Regina again took place (see course syllabus in reference materials).
