Munich is a large city with over 1.5 million inhabitants. Munich is located in the federal state of Bavaria, in the south of Germany. Munich is a center for culture, politics, science and media and numerous companies have their headquarters here. The foothills of the Alps offer many opportunities for excursions into the beautiful nature.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
The GMIN²T area project combines the classic STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural science, technology) with the humanities (GMINT). The central theme in the projects is sustainability or sustainable development, which is expressed by the "N2" (GMIN2T).

In this way, scientific questions are embedded in an overall context and, for example, social or cultural contexts are also included.
Questions in this context are relevant in every region of the world.

Rationale: 
We are at the very beginning of a new age. The stable modern dogma of the separation between natural sciences & humanities is increasingly reaching its limits in times of globalization, digitalization & the increasing challenges of environmental problems. At the same time, however, this offers the opportunity to illustrate that it is precisely here that dynamics emerge. These boundaries should therefore not be understood as separating, but rather as connecting points of contact. It is therefore a question of interfaces that form precisely at those points where future challenges can no longer be mastered on the basis of individual disciplines. We are convinced that it is above all at these boundaries or interfaces that progress in science takes place.
Objectives: 
Sustainable development and transformation knows no borders; it must be thought of and implemented in larger contexts. The GMIN²T area project Munich & Region is an urban-rural project between schools from the state capital Munich and schools from neighboring cities and districts. It promotes the exchange between city and country and strengthens the inter-communal and international cooperation through cooperations in the GMIN2T area.
Activities and/or practices employed: 
The GMIN²T area project combines the classical MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural science, technology) with the humanities (GMINT). The central theme in the projects is sustainability or sustainable development, which is expressed by the "N2" (GMIN2T).
Pupils explore their environment: The GMIN²T area project Munich & Region is based on the Citizen Science approach. Participating school projects collect measurement data on specific research questions. The projects present themselves to each other and the students exchange their findings, connections and solutions to problems. Together, they advocate for public awareness of their project findings. In doing so, they examine society's perception of the problem.
Research in international dialogue: The school projects can participate in an international exchange between German and Chinese schools. The students present their projects to each other in a digital dialog. They compare prerequisites, approaches and methods, present their results and discuss their projects with each other.
Size of academic audience: 
~ 100 persons (including teachers, students, citizens)
Results: 
The projects have very different topics and thus enable different results. The pilot project deals with the topic of temperature and oxygen content in the flowing water body "Mangfall". The project results will be made available to the local water management office after the project results have been completed. The project ends at the end of July 2023.
Lessons learned: 
The cooperation between civil society actors, administration and school projects is a positive challenge in which all participants achieve great learning successes.
