Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
Munich is a large city with over 1.5 million inhabitants. Munich is located in the federal state of Bavaria, in the south of Germany. Munich is a center for culture, politics, science and media and numerous companies have their headquarters here. The foothills of the Alps offer many opportunities for excursions into the beautiful nature.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
In Munich, the range of study options is broad and varied. In addition to the three large public universities, there are more than 16 smaller, private and public universities and (technical) academies. In order to bring sustainability into the focus of students, the Sustainability Award was established in 2012 by civil society organizations in Munich and is awarded every two years.

Rationale: 
The Sustainability Award honors outstanding scientific theses written at Munich universities. The aim of the prize is to encourage young scientists to deal with the complex, interdisciplinary topic of sustainability.
Objectives: 
Final theses from all disciplines can be submitted in German and English. The public awarding of prizes for these theses is intended to highlight and promote the competence of Munich as a location for sustainability research. The theses should be written in a way that is comprehensible beyond the boundaries of specialist fields and should also be suitable for stimulating public discussion.
Activities and/or practices employed: 
The submitted student research projects will be judged by a jury convened by the Verein für Nachhaltigkeit e.V., the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at LMU and RCE BenE München. The jury works on a voluntary basis and is composed of lecturers from Munich and other universities.
Size of academic audience: 
~ 100 students per period
Results: 
The award winners are presented on the homepage of the RCE Bene Munich. The abstracts of their scientific theses can be viewed here:

Over the years, the number of applicants of final theses in the field of sustainability alone increased to more than 60 per period (only those applying for the award).
Lessons learned: 
Students are generally showing more interest in dealing scientifically with sustainability issues. The Munich Sustainability Award for theses at Munich universities has become better known over the years and many students apply.

More and more sustainability work at Munich universities applying for the Munich Sustainability Award.
