Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
The region where these four schools are is called the Bengoh region, near Kuching, Sarawak. These schools have children who live in five villages in the same region, near the Sarawak Kiri River. Their source of livelihood is farming, fishing and tourism, and they are marginally poor. This river feeds into the city of Kuching and is the source of water for the city.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
The sustainable development challenge in this area is that the people in this region still practice open burning, use chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and often dump rubbish directly into the river.

Rationale: 
This project will build awareness about the impacts of pollution and the dumping of waste. It will also be an avenue to teach the young people how they can reduce these problems through implementing the 5Rs in their schools and villages.
Objectives: 
1. The learners will understand the concept and benefits of the 5Rs (cognitive learning).
2. The learners will participate in 5R activities for waste management in their schools and local communities (socio-emotional learning)
3. The learners will plan, implement, evaluate and replicate 5R activities that contribute to efficient waste management at home, in their schools and local communities (behavioural learning).
Activities and/or practices employed: 
1. Plan and run an awareness campaign for school students and teachers on the 5Rs and their importance which involves a variety of teaching methods (discussions, videos, instructions, games and hands on group activities).
2. Organize "Recycle Mania School Competition" among the participating schools.
3. Conduct food waste and used oil collection
4. Soap making workshop
5. Recycling scrapbook activity
Size of academic audience: 
250 students
Results: 
This project is still ongoing until August 2021.
Lessons learned: 
We are learning that it is difficult to meet up with the school administrators to plan the dates of the sessions with the children. We are learning as we go.
Key messages: 
The invaluable insights and eco-friendly practices that are being instilled in the students of this region through this project will be a source of inspiration and a foundation from which they will be better equipped to do their part in initiating green solutions as an integral part of Malaysian society.
Relationship to other RCE activities: 
The River Quality School Engagement Project will be focusing on the same 4 schools as this project.
Funding: 
We have obtained RM2000 funding from Datuk Dr Jerip Susil (ADUN Mambong N.19) and also still seeking funding from community leaders, the Sarawak River Board, WormingUp and G.A.M.E.S. PLT.
