Target Audience:
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Kitakyushu City has the highest aging rate of any ordinance-designated city in Japan, and its population is rapidly declining. In addition, during the period of rapid economic growth, Kitakyushu experienced rapid industrialization and faced pollution problems such as air and water pollution in the past. However, citizens, government, and businesses have worked together to solve these problems, and in 2008, the city was designated as an Environmental Model City.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
As mentioned above, Kitakyushu City has a declining birthrate and aging and declining population, which obviously affects a variety of issues, including economic and industrial problems. Since many of Japan's problems are rooted in the declining birthrate and aging and shrinking population, it is essential to work toward an environment that is comfortable for children and youth.

Status:
Completed
Period:
June, 2022 to October, 2022
Rationale:
Children learn not only through school education, but also through outdoor play and hands-on activities. However, opportunities for outdoor hands-on activities for today's children are decreasing due to the widespread use of TV, video games, and the Internet. The nonprofit organization "Kid's Work" provides elementary school children in Kitakyushu City with opportunities for hands-on activities that are not available at school, centering on outdoor activities.
Objectives:
In recent years, opportunities to think about food and life have been decreasing due to the active food service industry and the evolution of processed foods. As a result, it seems that more and more people are leaving food behind without resistance. The purpose of this project is to provide an opportunity to think about the relationship between food and life by learning about chickens, which we eat on a daily basis.
Activities and/or practices employed:
The first step was to eat chickens, and the participants had the opportunity to learn about both the living and food aspects of chickens by observing chickens, making skeletal specimens, visiting a butcher shop, and cooking chickens. Finally, the participants had the opportunity to squeeze a live chicken, process it, cook it, and eat it.
Size of academic audience:
6 elementary school students
Results:
In the interviews and written comments after the project, it was clear that the participants were interested in the process of turning a living chicken into chicken meat and thought about food and life, despite their fears, such as "It was scary to watch the chicken being strangled" and "Food is life, so I thought I would eat without leaving any leftovers"
Lessons learned:
In terms of publicity, we were able to secure the required number of 6 participants, but the number of applications was lower than expected, making it quite difficult to secure participants. We have to be creative in the way we publicize unique projects.
Key messages:
Food is life. I want people to remember that eating food means receiving life, and to be thankful and eat without leaving any leftovers.
