During this monumental time in history, it is essential to be educated, connect with good people, find hope, and discover new ways to make a difference.  To do so, GPSEN and our co-sponsors Portland Community College and the Port of Portland hosted our first annual Sustainability Symposium highlighting cutting-edge work on sustainability topics in the greater Portland region.

The Symposium featured keynote speaker Amy Pearl, founder of Hatch Innovation, named “Small Business Champion of Oregon” in 2016 by the Small Business Administration (SBA), and one of the winners of the Portland Business Journal’s 2015 Women of Influence Award.

The event also included afternoon speakers and workshops, an evening networking reception, with posters and table displays, and an awards ceremony, with presentations by our award winners, including:

  • Non-Profit:  Charity Fain and Sherrie Pelsma, Community Energy Project
  • Academic:  Joel Magnuson, PCC Economics Instructor
  • Youth:  Ibrahim Ibrahim, Muslim Education Trust
  • Business:  Hopworks Urban Brewery
