Country:
Korea, South
Location(s):
Dobong-Gu, Seoul
Address of focal point institution for project:
Dobong District Office, 656 Madeul-ro(Banghak-dong), Dobong-Gu, Seoul
Ecosystem(s):
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Dobong-Gu is striving to move beyond the image of bed-town to a vibrant and attractive city, and is moving towards the completion of a bigger Dobong based on the achievements of ‘good change’ and ‘infinite challenge’. Through sustainable development based on the five policy objectives of ‘Economically active city’, ‘Generationally shared city’, ‘Balanced development city’, ‘Cultural education city’, and ‘Decentralized city’ in response to the needs of residents and environmental changes, we are moving towards Dobong as a hub of Northeast Seoul.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
The purpose of Project Neuru is to help domestic and foreign youths understand ESD and practice it in their daily lives using photos and worksheet based on ecological literacy and strengthening of glocal leadership competency to ‘think globally, act locally'.
Project Neuru decides on topics related to various international issues in the global era linked to the SDGs, and focuses on freely discussing the ‘research topic’ presented by Project Neuru and finding answers using the ‘photo-voice’ research methods.

Status:
Ongoing
Period:
February, 2021 to November, 2021
Rationale:
If there was one disappointing thing about Dobong-gu, which has a variety of educational infrastructure, there were no domestic and foreign projects in which students participated in solidarity with other cities. As Dobong-gu received RCE certification and planned an ESD project in solidarity with domestic and foreign cities, Dobong-gu students had the opportunity to participate in the project.
Objectives:
Research Topic for 2021: The Truth of Hamburgers
- Reflect on the self associated with hamburger consumption within the global network.
- Through the truth of hamburgers, we understand sustainable food and diversity around the world and seek ways to put it into practice in our daily lives.
Activities and/or practices employed:
In this project, students proceed with the worksheets presented in each session, and they meet once a month and freely talk about worksheets over the results of this through Zoom. The submitted worksheets and the contents of the meeting via Zoom are analyzed according to the photo-voice research method, and the results are shared with students from participating RCE cities (Analysis in RCE Dobong-gu). Materials that have been compared and analyzed for each worksheet are going ultimately submitted as a UN University research report.
- Students participating in this project participate as participating researchers.
※ It is very meaningful that this project can be compared and analyzed by RCE cities and age using the 'photo-voice' research method with the same topic.
※ Photo-voice research method: This is a field-participatory research method that promotes change in the local community by revealing one's voice and experience through photography.
Size of academic audience:
61 students
Results:
- Conducted the first Zoom-based youth ESD project in Korea
- Participated by 4 RCE cities and 1 general city
- This year, it is being operated experimentally, and students participating in Project Neuru activities are well received.
- Held the 2021 DEOS(RCE Dobong ESD Open Seminar) in conjunction with Project Neuru
- Although it is not possible to generalize the data results, it is very meaningful to analyze and compare the data on the worksheet submitted by students from elementary school / middle school / high school/college).
Lessons learned:
-For non-English speaking country students, there are difficulties to use English, we try to show English is just a method through presentation including photos, etc
-in terms of the educational side, it would be nice to try a project that approaches ESD in a city where ESD awareness is still low.
Key messages:
We need a research-type project.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
- Dr. Kim Yuri (Seoul Education Research & Information Institute) content advice
- When making worksheets, RCE Srinagar, RCE Great Western Sydney, and RCE Kitakyushu assist us (Students' situation from each city who receive worksheets, including diversity, etc.)
Funding:
RCE Dobong-gu implemented this project with the budget of the Dobong District Office as a local government-centered type.
