Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
As far as mobility goes, the challenge is to provide reliable and affordable alternatives for the population in the present time and for the future. The mix and integration of mobility alternatives will dramatically improve the quality of life, inclusion and economic productivity for the region. Curitiba, as Brazil in general, has relied on combustion engine vehicles (bus, cars) for decades and the degradation of the urban space, the travel time and air quality is a major issue.
Status:
Ongoing
Period:
June, 2011
Rationale:
The central idea was to turn the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), in partnership with the Technological Federal University of Paraná (UTFPR), a diffusion core of a culture of more sustainable and healthy urban mobility with the emphasis in the use of bicycles. There were and there are many initiatives in place with inter and multi-disciplinary approach. They all consider evidence-based recommendations, demonstration, seminars, lectures, art and culture events and productions, in order to promote the "culture of the cyclo-mobility".
Objectives:
The main goals are to promote the "culture of cyclo-mobility" across the internal community by mobility modal challenges, visual and multimedia production, web site, simulator to the Campus community and the external community.
Activities and/or practices employed:
• Seminars, internal and external

Results:
Among many others, the 2018 intermodal challenge http://www.ciclovida.ufpr.br/?p=4261 , bike rides http://www.ciclovida.ufpr.br/?p=4308, seminars http://www.ciclovida.ufpr.br/?p=4312, and most recently, a cycle routes plan developed by faculty and students will be adopted by the City of Curitiba. Lessons learned:
The challenge is to keep a large team motivated and integrated, to keep the work inter and multidisciplinary and document the work. We have full institutional support from UFPR administration, but we lack resources to produce printed more material.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
We have held two international meetings (World RCE 2010 and RCE America 2016) and exchanged experiences and prospect on currently basis with some RCE-Americas.
