Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
The communities covered are classified as relocation areas, the residents had been required to leave their previous residence due either to unauthorized stay or disaster. Access to water was a major challenge for the relocated communities. Danglag community is on a hilly area in the municipality of Consolacion while the Mandaue community is within an urban poor setting, within Cebu Province.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
The communities chosen are relocation areas, hence, there are the challenges of poverty SDG1), health( SDG3), water and sanitation (SDG 6), gender empowerment (SDG 5) and SDG 17, of partnerships, local and global. How they are able to organize to slowly meet these challenges, especially in the case of water access and supply, through gender empowerment and/or alliances, will be highlighted in this presentation.

Objectives:
1) To analyze how relocated residents cope with their SD challenges in their new residence, 2) to study the forms taken by whom to meet the challenges, 3) to extract lessons that can be documented and shared with other relocatees and relocated communities in the future and for SDG advocacy.
Activities and/or practices employed:
Data collection through multiple methodologies- quantitative and qualitative ( field survey, Focus Group Discussions, key informants, field visits to the communities, literature review) has been done and is being completed. Regular dialogues with key groups and individuals in the communities and among their partners are also being undertaken. Partners and residents of these communities have also been invited to RCE-Cebu events on ESD and SDGs to allow them to know and understand other related initiatives related to SDGs in other parts of Cebu.
Results:
Initial results for Danglag community show how empowered women can work towards land ownership and water access for poor residents. The land ownership process took years to succeed. With the help of a business company, local and national NGOs, the residents are now owners of their lot and homes. The water challenge took the form of moving away from private contractor’s expensive and poor water supply to building a community water cooperative. In the Mandaue community, the initial research findings show the important role of partnerships, global ( a foreign NGO) linking with national and local NGOs and government units and agencies to supply water to the residents. The data collection for this second community is still to be completed.

Relationship to other RCE activities:
RCE partners have various main issues – gender, water, sustainable and resilient communities, poverty, hunger and other issues. The research findings will have policy implications as well to guide not only RCE partners but those in government as well, locally and globally related to ESD and SDGs.
