Two key questions for the continental discussion session

Dear members of Asia-Pacific RCEs,

Please feel free to share your idea and opinions in regard to the following two questions. Make sure to introduce yourself to all (especially for new RCE members) which RCE you are from when you make comments. Thank you and look forward to your active participation!!

1) What are the key issues/challenges facing RCEs currently in the aspect of the Asia-Pacific region?

2) What are the top three things the group feels need to be discussed in persons at the 7th Global RCE Conference?

Dear Mr. Sachiko Yasuda, 1. The key issues/challenges facing RCE in the aspect of the Asia-Pacific region : Less financial resources Lack of teaching/learning materials on ESD issues in local language. 2. Top three things which need to be discussed at 7th Global RCE Conference ? Priorizing issues/themes for integrated action for visible impact of RCE activities in the region. Discussion on modalities for resource generation. Development of regional platform for networking and enhanced inter RCE collaboration at national/regional level. I hope these comments are useful.

Dear Neelima, Welcome to the RCE Portal - RCE Asia-Pacific Continental Community! Thank you very much for sharing your ideas on these two key questions. Some challenges you mentioned (e.g. financial resource) will be discussed not only during the continental session but also during the operation session (Fundraising and Marketing). Integrated actions for visible impact of RCE activities are crucial issues. This can be definitely approached in the regional/ continental level as well as in the global level. In the past few years, Asia-Pacific RCEs have identified 4 thematic areas: Community; Biodiversity; Schools and Youth and have been seeking collaborative actions. During the last RCE AP meeting in Balikpapan, DRR was also added as a merging issue in the Asia-Pacific region. Though I think we still need more strategic approaches as to how to make a visible impact and bring changes to the community. In addition, the RCE AP members have a common platform for the Asia-Pacific RCEs called "Sejahtra Project” and the draft vision paper for the AP RCE has been developed (still under way) by some voluntary members of RCEs. I am sure that the draft version will be shared with you shortly for your valuable inputs. Let's wait for more comments from other RCEs! Warm regards, Sachiko

Thank you Sachiko, I am Professor MA Rahman from RCE Greater Dhaka would like tho emphasize on two important issues one is Landscape management as it is directly associated with adaptation and biodiversity. Since Landscape is the diving factor to keep the earth system running and it also controls the adaptation with diversified species. So I think it is the most critical theme especially for diverse habitats of the most densely populated region of the world.

Another important issue is imposed unsustainable technology to the LDCs which should be stopped. In most of the cases the LDCs have to agree with the tagged donation or trading and in the name of development unsustainable technologies do harm rather than benefit of the society. Therefore I urge to our discussion group to bring these issues in the theme and let we discuss for a better world.

Cross regional RCE collaboration needs utmost essential and I think financial crisis in the most important bar. I could not attend the AsiaPacific conference and I could not share the views with others. UNU should take some responsibility as well. Yes RCE network has provided us the opportunity to share the views progess and benefits of working together. Many of the LDCs do not have financial ability to run the projects but I request the RCE UNU IAS to support and epand some projects with the LDCs to solve some problems. Suppose traditional knowledge, Biodiversity, Landscape management and DRR needs extra support to collect the information, scientific values of traditional knowledge, sustainable agriculture and for specific researches on ESD practices which in many cases regional and locality based. UNU should extend collaborative research with the national and regional RCEs.

Another important issue is development of simple ESD tools to support the National RCEs suppose RCE Greater Dhaka has been exercising Knowledge-based area Development (KBAD)under a cooperative which needs further research for regional expansion of the model. Therefore, It is essential to find some people who can develop a model and expand it regionally. Therefore, Cooperation is an essential factor to make ESD successful and meaningful.
