Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
The 4 northern provinces of the Netherlands and the German province of Lower Saxony are largely rural and agricultural regions, consisting mainly from agricultural land, to forests and (drained) peatlands. While the region has a big focus on agriculture there are various industrial hubs. Furthermore there a few large cities, with most notable Groningen en Enschede on Dutch side, while Hannover is by far the largest city on German side.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
The project aimed to address the challenges of climate change and the role that industry plays in this. Furthermore, it aimed at connecting youth across the border in order to foster connections and collaboration.

Rationale: 
For the 75th anniversary of Lower Saxony, the Prime Minister Weil of Lower Saxony, invited a delegation of youth from the Netherlands, to the conference about Climate and Industry, that was held to mark this milestone. Borne out of this invitation, an exchange programme with 4 schools from the 4 Northern provinces in the Netherlands and 1 from Lower Saxony emerged.
Objectives: 
The objective was to prepare the visit of the Dutch Youth delegation to the conference around Climate and Industry for the 75th anniversary of Lower Saxony. Furthermore, the exchange intended to connect Dutch and German youth in order to enhance cross border collaboration and connection.
Activities and/or practices employed: 
As part of the exchange the high school students came together to discuss the topic and prepare for the conference intended for November 2021. Part of this was visiting industry partners to talk about the impact of climate change, policies to address climate change and what would be necessary to more effectively combat climate change.

Results: 
As part of the exchange a number of preparatory meetings and industry visits were held on Dutch side. Furthermore the Dutch delegation visited the students of ISG Schaumburg in Hagen, Germany twice. Once in November 2021 and another time in July 2022. During the first visit a climate manifest produced by the students was presented to a German Member of Parliament, while during the second visit the manifest was discussed with Prime Minister Weil and the 4 Commissioners of the King of the four northern Dutch Provinces.
Key messages: 
Youth are a key stakeholder in getting a greener future and already at highschool level they have, when given time and resources to delve into the topic, a profound understanding of the challenges we are facing.
