RCE Dobong-gu - 2022
(2021) Building the Dobong ESD Sustaining Alliance
Region:
Asia-Pacific
Country:
Korea, South
Location(s):
Dobong-gu, Seoul
Address of focal point institution for project:
Dobong District Office, 656 Madeul-ro (Banghak-dong), Dobong-gu, Seoul, Korea
Ecosystem(s):
Target Audience:
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Dobong-gu is striving to move beyond the image of bed-town to a vibrant and attractive city, and is moving towards the completion of a bigger Dobong based on the achievements of ‘good change’ and ‘infinite challenge’. Through sustainable development based on the five policy objectives of ‘Economically active city’, ‘Generationally shared city’, ‘Balanced development city’, ‘Cultural education city’, and ‘Decentralized city’ in response to the needs of residents and environmental changes, we are moving towards Dobong as a hub of Northeast Seoul.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
To support ESD classes in elementary schools in our district, ESD instructors were nurtured through the training of the first ESD instructors linked to job creation. Support for developing ESD expertise and leadership for them has been linked to the growth of autonomous civic groups.
Status:
Ongoing
Period:
August, 2021
Rationale:
To spread ESD in the community, an qutonomous and democratic civic group in needed. Currently, Dobong-gu is promoting ESD and carring out ESD operation in connection with the community in stages, and there was a need for a civic group with professional capabilities to serve as a channel and hub for the spread of ESD. Although it started with job creation for ESD class support, we would like to report on the activities of the 'Dobong ESD Sustaining Alliance', which is gradully growing into an independent civic group.
Objectives:
By cultivating ESD expertise and leadership capabilities with the Dobong ESD Sustaining Alliance, we solidify a key role in the spread ESD and the growth of autonomous civic groups.
Activities and/or practices employed:
The Dobong ESD Sustaining Alliance has held a montly meeting since August 2021 to conduct ESD class research and a reading group in connection with SDGs and ESD to develop ESD expertise and leadership capabilities. These efforts of the Dobong ESD Sustaining Allicance have been selected as the 'Humming Sock's Neck (SDG12)' in the 'Resident-led Learing Project' conducted by Lifelong Education Team of the Dobong District Office this year and it is now preparing for its project.
Size of academic audience:
11 persons
Results:
As the members of the Dobong ESD Sustaining Alliance are made up of citizens from all walks of life, it was a bit difficult to operate due to the different personalities and capabilities of each. However, now, members understand the purpose of the meeting and organize. Additional, they operate activities in connection with the local community through ESD as a medium. RCE Dobong-gu is a local government-oriented type, so we wanted to provide a framework that could be more closely related to the local community and form a voluntary civic organization. The Dobong ESD Sustaining Alliance becomes the starting point.
Lessons learned:
To cultivate a vountary civic organization, rather than indiscriminate support for budget and project, it is necessary to listen to their needs and spare no effort to support them in various ways so that then can grow gradually.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
Through exchanges with RCE Inje and RCE Kitakyushu, we are enhancing our ESD expertise.
Funding:
It is being executed with the budget of the Sustainable Development Division in the Dobong District Office.
