Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
The Nizhny Novgorod agglomeration with the population over 2 million people is the third according to size in Russia governing the development strategy of the entire region. Nizhny Novgorod city was found in 1221 (the 800 years jubilee 2021). During this long history Nizhny Novgorod accumulates a large cultural, social and economic capital that is safe by people of the local community.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
There are several obstacles on the way of the Nizhny Novgorod agglomeration’s development:
- infrastructure inefficiency;
- environmental problems;
- depopulation;
- methods of management do not comply with the SD principles;
- obsolete and worn out industrial base of the region.

Transfer of the Nizhny Novgorod agglomeration to sustainable development could be considered an answer to contemporary challenges.

- human development through the development of spheres that ensure the formation, accumulation and personal
realization of human potential at a high quality level;
- economic development, within which a person can achieve a high standard of living and
welfare as well as professional realization;
- spatial development for comfortable and safe human living.
Activities and/or practices employed: 
- Online traffic jam monitoring for mobile users
- Public economic and ecological education (for ageing people)
- Training program for sustainable thinking “Economical impact of start-ups on the regional sustainable development”
- Participatory budgeting for Nizhny Novgorod,
- Co-working network for Nizhny Novgorod city’s communities
Size of academic audience: 
150-200
Results: 
- 2 conferences and 4 workshops on project topics
- Graduation qualification theses on sustainable development
- Publication of information materials about education for sustainable development in local media
Lessons learned: 
Important success factors are: networking, availability of experts in the relevant field, organizational support of the activities from the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

Key words: modeling social and economic dynamics of the agglomeration,application of sustainable development principles in territorial planning and management,developing personal priorities of sustainable development.
