The program involved innovations, inventions and video competition focusing on Sustainable Development Goals with three themes that are Quality Education (SDG 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) and Life on Land (SDG 15).
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
Student leadership in sustainability cannot be achieved single handed by a single stakeholder. Collaboration proves a strategic avenue to develop students’ leadership in SDG. Therefore, in line with 21st century learning competencies, it is essential that students are empowered to create innovation and inventions related to sustainability. It is important that students in Penang played a leading role in SDG and share with other students around the globe through RCE Centres.

Rationale:
In this program, students will be involved in innovations and inventions via video competition focusing on Sustainable Development Goals themes. This year three themes were selected: Quality Education (SDG 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) and Life on Land (SDG 15). With this program, students in Penang are given the opportunity to share and exchange ideas on sustainability related to the specific themes. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the seminar (webinar) and competition conducted via online.
Objectives:
• To develop student leadership for building a sustainable society through education focus on the following themes which are Quality Education (SDG 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) and Life on Land (SDG 15)
• To promote Penang as a state in Malaysia that is actively engaging students in promoting SDGs at school level
• Enabling the strengthening of collaboration between industry and school in building innovation ecosystems to ensure the creation of knowledge, talent development and product development excellence.
• To create leaders who are able to transform their knowledge for a sustainable society
• To empower students to be the leaders in promoting SDGs
• To promote Penang as a state in Malaysia that is actively engaging students in promoting SDGs at school level

Activities and/or practices employed:
This project focus on Hand’s theme on taking actions on ESD while cultivating the priority action area 4: Empowering and mobilizing youth in the ESD 2030 Roadmap. At the early stage of this project, RCE Penang identified the SDG Experts to educate youth and school children on SDG 4, SDG 7 and SDG 15. Then, we conducted an online meeting with SDG experts for the selected theme and the form of video that will be shown to students to provide knowledge on related SDG themes. The recorded webinar by SDG experts watched by students and teachers via YouTube Channel RCE Penang. Finally, we organized video competition for school students to educate and raise awareness focuses on SDG 4, SDG 7 and SDG 15as well as SDG 2030 as a whole. The recording of the program was also available on Facebook: RCE Penang at USM, to continuously promoting and educating public on SDGs.

Results:
The project was successfully implemented. The project was funded by grants from the Penang Education Council which aims to promote ESD at the national and international levels. By highlighting this SDG, students are more aware to preserve and conserve the ocean as an essential global resource for future sustainability. All the themes were chosen as its very close to students’ life experience and dynamic for empowering students about ESD and SDG. Students’ video will be published via YouTube RCE Penang as a competition based on SDG content and leadership initiatives and creativities.
Lessons learned:
This program provides a collaboration opportunity for students in Penang to share and exchange ideas on sustainability related to the specific themes.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
RCE Penang will make this program as a flagship program among inter-RCE.
