Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
Zaria is a major city in Kaduna State in Northern Nigeria, sitting on approximately 563km2 land area. However, settlement predates the rise of Zazzau as the region, had a history of sedentary Hausa settlement, with institutional but pre-capitalist market exchange and farming. With a population of over 1 million, most of the inhabitants engage in informal economic activities. Also, literacy level is also very low despite the fact that the area plays a host to over 13 major tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
During the lifetime of students on Campus, Carbon are generated from their activities like travels during semester break, energy for cooking and electricity generators especially in developing countries and Ahmadu Bello University inclusive. Thousands of Students are graduated annually with no jobs to offer them. The Orange Plantation projects is geared towards addressing this challenges. The project will offset carbon footprints that have being generated by students during their stay at University by donating one seedling of orange. When the plantation is fully established it will create job opportunities and income to the University.

Rationale: 
Students generate carbon on daily basis from their activities that are indirectly affecting the environment such as travels during semester break, use of fossils fuel to power electricity generators and source of power for cooking especially in developing countries like Nigeria and Ahmadu Bello University inclusive. At the end, thousands of Students are graduated annually with no jobs to offer them. The goals of the project is to offset carbon footprints that have being generated by students during their stay at University by donating one seedling of orange. When the plantation is fully established it will create job opportunities for skilled and unskilled labour, provide annual income to the university of up to two hundred million annually and the improvement of food supply chain in the region. Each student is required to contribute N500 annually to plant and nurture one orange tree over a period of three years until the tree starts fruiting. The plantation is to provide the basis for establishment of industries in Juice making industry and for sourcing of bi-products. The project provides a transition between ESD learning programmes in the university with lifelong actionable project that students are likely to engage in later part of life.

Results: 
The Third batch of 3,000 orange seedlings have been planted.
Lessons learned: 
The project has potential of actualizing SDG's, however most of the students could not afford to pay for an orange seedling. Also, the cost of maintaining the orange plantation is huge.
