Iskandar Malaysia region is the Malaysia Southern economic development corridor in the state of Johor. The region was 2,217 sq/km previously and now covers an area of 4,749 sq/km since February 2019. As one of the economic regions and corridors in Malaysia, Iskandar Malaysia is focussed on bringing economic and infrastructure investments to an already established urban conurbation located at the southernmost tip of Peninsular Malaysia.

Rationale:
IMELC aims to create awareness of Low Carbon Society (LCS) among students, teachers and their families in achieving the target of carbon reduction for Iskandar Malaysia by year 2025 as outlined in the Low Carbon Society Blueprint for Iskandar Malaysia 2025.
Objectives:
The objectives of IMELC, specifically are:
i. To foster LCS awareness among primary students, teachers and their families(public community) through school education.
ii. To disseminate knowledge, awareness and practice of LCS among the community through primary students and teachers.
iii. To reduce carbon emission through awareness and education.
iv. To create a Low Carbon Society for Iskandar Malaysia by year 2025.

Activities and/or practices employed:
IMELC is a student learning activity on LCS that is conducted as formal or informal education at school setting targeting the primary school students.

About 40,000 participating students from 403 schools around Johor, Malaysia
Results:
The total carbon reduction by participating schools in IMELC 2018 is 590,662.64kgCO2. RM174,925.14 electricity bills and RM32,923.82 water bills were saved and RM58,664.55 was collected from recycling. Therefore, a total of
RM266,513.51 was saved and earned by the participating schools in IMELC 2018.

Lessons learned:
IMELC 2018 is a success for many schools in Iskandar Malaysia to provide awareness on Low Carbon, reduced carbon emission and provide economic benefits for the schools. The average carbon reduction, electricity bill saving, water bill saving and recycling per school have increased compared to the previous years.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
1. IMELC was awarded the Outstanding Flagship Project (Climate Change) at the Global RCE Award 2015 by the United Nations University (UNU) as well as several other innovation awards such as ITEX, PECIPTA and INATEX.
2. IMELC is also listed in a book entitled “Rising to the Challenge: Malaysia’s contribution to the SDGs” in 2017.
3. IMELC was awarded a Gold Medal by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) at the National Intellectual Property Award (Copyright Category) on 13 September 2018, given by the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, and also a Gold Medal by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
4. IMELC is selected from among 63 submission for the Global Prize of Okayama ESD Award 2018. The award signifies that IMELC is a model project for ESD. The Mayor of Okayama City conferred the award to RCE Iskandar on 27th October 2018.
