Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
It is a cosmopolitan region with dairy and agricultural farming as the main socioeconomical activities. Many youth associate themselves with athletics as the main sport. Few farmers practice large scale farming with majority practicing small scale farming.

Rationale:
The program seeks to mitigate some of the challenges that schools face such as lack of specially trained teachers on environmental matters and the requirement of efficient teachers and students to change the methods of imparting environmental concepts. Environmental education is essential for a healthy and sustainable society. Many current environmental problems are due to ignorance of basic ecological facts of life.
The strategy is to provide tailor made approach that involves creating awareness on environment through forest conservation in schools. Participating teachers and students are provided with capacity building on environment and forest conservation. Thereafter, schools will be required with parents’ consent to set aside a portion of land in their schools to grow trees. The campaign will focus in mentoring both Boys and Girls in school. The transformed beneficiaries shall be expected to influence behaviors’ of the wider community around them.
Objectives:
GOAL
1) To promote environmental education in all levels of schools.
OBJECTIVES
1) To launch a mentorship program and a competition in the North Rift region where the public and private stakeholders will be involved
2) To educate students on the importance of environmental conservation.
3) To train students to provide environmental conservation services to the communities.
4) To create 2 publications/newsletters on environmental conservation
5) To organize workshops for 200 secondary school teachers to be trained in how to maximize the use and dissemination of the materials.
6) To carry out a post workshop evaluation.
7) To organize Monitoring and evaluation workshops 3 months after the release of the publications and deliver a project summary evaluation to develop a strategy for possible further publications and a wider roll-out of this format of teaching and dissemination.
Activities and/or practices employed:
In this program, the environment actors, Students will be involved in
1) RCE North Rift and CHES AFRICA grand Launch and mentorship Conference, Capacity building and Leadership in environment conservation and Management
2) Tree Panting Expedition, Sustainable development Goals sensitization,
3) Launch of Green Clubs, North Rift Region training on Conservation and Members of the green Clubs Influence the School and community to join hands in conservation,
4) Promote Networking

Results:
IMPACT
3,000 children reach an estimated 20,000 family members and a multiple of this within their communities. A large section of the population will be reached with a relatively modest material input.
This method of “bottom-up” teaching and dissemination is an important component of modern awareness building and marketing techniques. Young children play an important part in every family and community environment – they represent the future for all of us. As such they carry a loud voice within the community and are often instrumental in setting general behavioral trends. We are convinced that our 3 month post-project evaluation will show a definitive positive impact.

Key messages:
Forests play an active role in achieving vision 2030 and in transitioning to a green economy (Economic development and rural livelihoods) over 2 billion people depend on forests for survival from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides providing habitats for animal and livelihood for human, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion, increase capacity of climate resilience and mitigation and improve environmental health through supply of clean water and air.
