The Low carbon community programme incorporates the low carbon lifestyle in a village community such as practice of energy saving, 3-Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), creation of green products and others as a form of low carbon mitigation measures. This approach is one of the strategies to guide and empower local communities at FELDA Taib Andak (FTA) on adopting and practising low carbon lifestyle living.

The Low Carbon Eco-Village programme was initiated in 2012 by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and their Japanese partners (Kyoto University, Okayama University, National Institute for Environmental Studies) under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) project. Altogether 12 programmes were outlined and so far those already carried out included composting, 3R awareness and competition, planting of bamboo trees, provision of a pathway for pedestrians and cyclists. The FELDA community get exposure and knowledge on low carbon activities and aims throughout the programme implementation. These programmes are now owned and run by the communities themselves.  Ultimately, the objective of the programme is to raise awareness and direct involvement of such local communities in low carbon activities, with a view to duplicating this approach in other FELDA communities throughout Malaysia.

In December 2014, IRDA and UTM then collaborated with FTA once more.  This time, the inclusion of economic elements led to the continuation of the low carbon eco-village programme. This was seen as an important factor in sustaining the communities’ active involvement and thus expected to ensure the programme’s long-term survival.  For example, FTA have come up with a small business venture through the composting efforts by selling the compost locally through the creation of a cooperative.  They are also able to brand their product.
