The ERA has the aim to support the creation of a global learning space on sustainable development as it was first described in the Luneburg-Declaration 2001 through a regions based, coherent and proactive global initiative. The ERA promotes immediate progress in the implementation of ESD to take on the challenges from there, with a much better informed upcoming generation capable of change. In order to achieve the above, the regional partnerships and practical cooperation between government, education, science and industry is essential. This vision on ESD is being made operational in a joint concept, starting out from shared ideas but also characterized as ‘learning by doing’, a social learning process in itself.
