Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Lagos covers the entire Lagos State. The State has a population of 17.5 million although a latest report on the state assigns a population of 21 million to it. The last state government worked towards transforming Lagos State to a mega city. It has a seaport on the islands, having Apapa as the seat of the seaport administration. A long sand spit as the Bar Beach, which stretches up to 100 kilometers (62 miles), and bound by the Atlantic Ocean characterizes it.

The seat of the state government at Alausa Ikeja includes 57 local government areas as well as Local Community Development Areas (LCDAS). The present regime has Governor Akinwumi Ambode as the Executive Governor and a structure of 43 ministries and parastatals. Historically, Lagos State was founded in 1997 with a geographical area coverage of 1,381 m2. The seaport opened up business for exports of agricultural products and oil, as well as import of machinery.

Extensive land and air networks make the entire hinterland very accessible. People from the hinterlands make their way down to Lagos to offer skilled and unskilled services to earn a living. This has raised key problems on quality of labor, safety issues such as high crime rates, religious intolerance, and inadequate housing. Education is key to finding solutions to these social problems.

RCE Lagos is aligning these issues with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and lately linked it further with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus has been on quality of primary education as the only pre-requisite to efficient and successful secondary and tertiary education of the nation. All students of the primary education have to acquire high proficiency in numeracy and literacy using electronic based teaching.

Other areas where RCE Lagos is involved are sustainable development among indigenous people, youth programmes, and primary and secondary schools sustainable development programmes.
