5. Project description
Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.:

miniSASS is a biomonitoring scoring system which provides a health index of the water quality in rivers with the help of indicator organisms. This tool does not require any expensive equipment or require any advanced scientific knowledge. Fresh water in southern Africa is a serious problem in terms of poor quality, quantity and access especially to poor people. This project has created an opportunity for addressing the river pollution issues and is also answering to the Sustainable Development Goal number 6 to Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The project’s aim is to encourage citizens in schools and communities to assess their river health index, through citizen science processes. By identifying insects (macro-invertebrates) in rivers and streams, the water quality can be assessed with the help of a simple reference sheet. The findings can then be placed on a Google Earth plane customized just for this purpose. With this system we have ‘live data’ in a ‘cloud of knowing’. For more information visit www.minisass.org

Description:
This project is growing in popularity and it is global thanks to the Google Earth platform and a mobile application where citizens collect data and ascertain a river health index (RHI). This data is then available to help solve pollution and other stream or river challenges. It is also available for anyone to take part in.
