Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

One of the first two RCEs in Nigeria. An RCE in the middle of extremely rich people and extremely poor people. RCE is always working to strike a balance. Situated in Kano, North-Western Nigeria.

Based in Kano State in North West Nigeria, the RCE covers six States, which include Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi States with a combined population of 36.8 million people. The RCE also has five other organisations as its collaborators; these include Bayero University Kano, traditional rulers, Emirate Councils, and some traditional institutions. The RCE also has collaborations with NGOs and CBOs from other states in northern Nigeria.

Goals and Objectives:

Vision:
RCE Kano is to contribute for sustainable inclusive communities through learning in education for sustainability and transform a fractured traditional form of education that will be functional and sustainable for all.

Objectives:

  • ESD programmes are tailored to address issues and the local context of the community in which they operate;
  • Increase access to quality education that is most needed in the regional context;
  • Deliver trainers’ training programmes and develop methodologies and learning materials;
  • Lead advocacy and awareness-raising efforts in the public about the importance of educators and the essential role of ESD in achieving a sustainable future.
  • Promote the long-term goals of ESD, such as environmental stewardship, social justice, and improvement of the quality of life.

Achievements:

RCE Kano Skill Acquisition Program
Sixty three trainees were graduated from different fields of vocational training. The breakdown is as follows: Leather works 11, shoe making 22, carpentry 17, automobile mechanic 7 and plumbing 6. This is at September 30th 2016. We expect the number to rise to 101 by the year ended 31st December 2016.

The RCE is also negotiating with the mobile phone sellers and repairers association to start training youth on mobile phone repairs.

Climate Change and Environmental Change Risk Management
The school of Legal and general studies Katsina in collaboration with the RCE organized a climate change mitigation and environmental change risk management to convert desert encroachment. Shelterbelt was created with about 2500 planted trees. Botanical garden was also designed and economic trees were planted therein. The shelterbelt was extended to the community through the community engagement committee and plan is under way to involve other communities around.
