2. Project Information
1. Project title:
Improving effectiveness and efficiency in Hospital services in Ho Chi Minh city.
2. Project Description:
The overloadin treatment areas of big hospitals in Vietnam in general and Ho Chi Minh city in particular is a really serious problem at present, consequently causes a very long time waiting for patients before they can consult with doctors and receive the treatments. Some hospitals have been paid attention to solve this problem but the efforts seem to be individually. Therefore, this research project has been carried out with the expectation of reducing the waiting time of patients in treatments process and increasing the number of patients receiving treatment services in a number of hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City.
The project is undertaken by identifying the cause of problem, analysing and simulating the real cases at treatment areas of three hospitals with the support of simulation softwares, and propose the solutions for improving treatment process performance of studied hospitals.

6. Expected outcomes::
With this project, the new processes, procedures for treatment areas at three hopitals are given to solve the current problem. The application of the study outcomes would be able to reduce the waiting time of patients and increase the number of patients treated in most of hospitals. Moreover, the outcomes also support The office of Health Care in changing some treatment policies at hospitals.
7. Duration of the Project::
6/2012-6/2013

8. Project coordination (e.g. teams):
The project is mainly coordinated by Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering with the collaboration of RCE Southern Vietnam.
4. Project results
10. Project results :
The project doucment has been submitted to Scientist committee of Vietnam National University-HCMC and under consideration for approval.
11. Contribution to reforms and innovations:
At the begining, the result of this project will be applied in some hospitals in Ho Chi Minhy City. After short time of running, collecting feedback and revising, the project will be presented to The office of Health Care of Ho Chi Minh City to support for adjusting on current Health system policy. Morever, the project will be expanded to reseach in other hospitals of the city.
12. Unexpected / unplanned results:
- The weak colaboration among team's members.
- The project process is not on time.

6. Participation
15. Type of involvement:
Doctors, Nurses, Information Management Department of Cho Ray Hospital, Children Hospitals and 115 Hospital have invited to join in this project.Their knowledge on existing treatment processes as well as proposed solutions have been collected and analysed. Moreover, the data on existing performance of these hospital will be collected for developing and calibrating the model simulation.
7. Education & Learning
17. Educational activities:
Train for data collection: techniques for data collection, using stop watch, recognizing types of data and refining data ; some software are used such as SPSS, Matlab, Arena
Simulating the current treatment process on computer: registering, treating, testing, etc. The details of treatment process is diference among hospitals.
Simulating new model of treatment process at hospital: calibrating the result of simulation by existing data in order to propose a new model for the current treatment system at hospitals.
18. Learning activities:
The project will be used for specialzing seminars as an extra teaching activitive.
