Geographical & Education Information
Region:
Asia-Pacific
Country:
Japan
Location(s):
Sapporo City, Hokkaido Prefecture
Target Audience:
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Sapporo, the main activity area, has nature surrounding the city. Urban parks and forests are scattered
throughout the city, but nature is extremely scarce.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
・Although there are many natural environments in Sapporo, many families do not have much experience
playing freely in nature, such as playing with water in a river or playing with fallen leaves in a forest.
・The program is expected to increase opportunities for families to interact with nature and to develop a sense
of respect for nature, thereby triggering them to think about local environmental issues and take action.
Contents
Status:
Ongoing
Period:
January, 2004
Objectives:
To create an opportunity for parents and children who participate in the event to become familiar with nature
by learning that there are places to play with nature even near cities, and to visit with their families and friends
after the event. In addition, children should learn "the importance of nature," "imagination," and "skills and
physical strength necessary for life" through playing in nature.
Activities and/or practices employed:
The program will create opportunities for children to interact with nature by holding events in various natural
environments such as forests, mountains, rivers, and the sea in the Sapporo area. The program does not have a
fixed program schedule, but rather provides a place for children to play according to their interests, respecting
the feelings and sensations they gain from the experience of interacting with nature and other people.
Size of academic audience:
About 10 families for each event (about 20 people).
Results:
Many of the participants in Forest kindergarden are repeaters, sometimes inviting their siblings and friends to participate
as well. We believe that every year we are able to provide a place where children can grow up enjoying "getting close to
nature" and connecting it to their own play
Lessons learned:
We learned that children have the ability to find what they need and are interested in now from fallen leaves,
stones, insects, etc. on their own and think of ways to play, without having to prepare a special program.
