1. Project title:
Early childhood learning support
2. Project Description:
In this project the aim is to aid in the development of literacy and numeracy skills in early childhood age which is the age from 5 to about 8 years of age. This include the pre-primary and first 3 years of primary school. We would like to develop and distribute learning materials that would assist children in both formal and informal education. Since most of the early childhood teaching is done by mothers as well, we need to develop material that is easy to use, durable and widely accessible.

10. Project results :
A meeting was held between members from NIED involved in early childhood and primary education and Victoria Keding (NaDEET), Liz Kohmen (NARREC) and Elsabe Julies (UNAM). There was a brainstorming session and the following were decided on:
1. Education material will be produced initially as a newspaper insert of about 8 pages. These will also be in the form of a worksheet on one side of the paper, while the other side will have large illustrations that can be utilized by teachers in classrooms as posters. The material of the paper will have to be of a high quality and durability. Newspapers are read by parents and readily available in most parts of the country. It is normally parents, especially mothers who are responsible for early childhood education.
2. Other distribution points will be Nampost offices, which are especially practical in rural areas, since most people visit the post office nearest to them.
3. AGRA distributes an agricultural letter and the material can be distributed as an insert in these letters to farmers where often there are no kindergartens on such farms.
4. Online resources should also be provided. This will be possible as soon as the website for the RCE has been established and it can also be posted on the NIED website. Maurice will develop the RCE website.
5. The proposal for development of the material, printing and distribution of the material will be developed by Liz and Victoria with Elsabe making contributions as well.
6. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare should be contacted and involved.

So far we are still busy with developing the proposal which will be submitted to funding agencies for funding of the project.
