The RCE SDG Youth Challenge is a global youth-led initiative run annually that connects youth leaders working in their own communities to a larger global platform. The initiative aims to engage and empower local youth leaders with the opportunity to have a voice and implement their own place-based projects on issues that matter to them, supporting ESD. 

On 7 July 2021, a Special Event of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development highlighted the critical role of further education in achieving sustainable development and ensuring a sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2nd RCE Global Webinar, 'Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: action through learning in a time of global crises', took place on 8 June, 2021. Hosted by RCE Scotland and the Global RCE Service Centre, this webinar was the second of two 'bridge' events between the 2020 RCE Regional Meetings and the 12th Global RCE Conference to be held in Autumn 2021. Chaired by Dr. Rehema White, RCE Scotland, the event saw over 90 participants coming together to focus on taking action on the most pressing of issues: climate change.

The 'Roadmap for the RCE Community 2021–2030' was launched at the 2nd RCE Global Webinar, held on 8 June, 2021. The Roadmap serves to guide the RCE community, like-minded partner organisations and networks on planning and implementation to expand, accelerate and scale up the impacts of RCEs' actions related to the SDGs and the ESD for 2030 framework at local, national and global levels during the period 2021-2030. The UNESCO Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, held virtually from 17-19 May, 2021, gathered more than 2,800 participants from 161 countries together, including decision-makers and those in the education for sustainable development (ESD) community across the globe (with an additional 10,000 viewers on the public livestream) to mobilise support for ESD for 2030 and commit to plans for action via the Berlin Decla

During the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD, from 2015-2019, close to 140 climate education projects were conducted by RCEs across 32 countries. Not only did these projects have a focus on SDG 13 (Climate Action), but all were tied to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and covered a range of other sustainable development challenges.

A new publication from the Education for Sustainable Development Project at UNU-IAS has been launched today, featuring a number of outstanding climate education projects from Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCEs).

The first of two webinars in the lead-up to the 12th Global RCE Conference was held on 4 February, 2021, under the theme 'RCE Global Network 2021: Achieving the SDGs: Action through Learning'.

Organisations that are interested in initiating the RCE process and applying to become an RCE are invited to submit a main application document along with the application summary by 15 May 2024 (12:00pm, noon JST) to UNU-IAS.
