Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Nyanza Region - geographical scope:

The region comprises 12,613.4 km2 made up of Kisumu County: 2,085.9 km2; Nyamira County: 899.3 km2; Siaya County: 2,530.5 km2; Kisii County: 1,317.4 km2; Homa Bay County: 3,183.3 km2 and Migori County: 2,597 km2. Nyanza comprises of 39 local authorities, each of which is consisted of various towns, municipalities and villages.

Goals and Objectives:

Short term objectives

  • Carry out a participatory needs assessment for ESD in Nyanza region to identify stakeholders, local problems, priorities and existing capacity for ESD in the region
  • Establish networks, partnerships and resource centre of and for organisations concerned with ESD in Nyanza region
  • Identify and promote examples of good practices in ESD in Nyanza region

Long term objectives

  • Promote understanding and raise awareness of ESD and to enhance active participation by stakeholders
  • Establish a training of trainers programme in ESD for stakeholder organisations
  • Develop materials and tools for implementing ESD in the region
  • Establish a regional information system to document and disseminate best practices and deliver effective ESD to the local community
  • Improve the livelihoods of communities in Nyanza region
  • Promote sustainable urban development in Nyanza region and reduce waste through ESD

  • Kajulu Hills rehabilitation program under Kazi Kwa Vijana
  • Greening of schools and institutions program
  • Seedling production for catchments and riverbank aforestation and other small water bodies like dams e.g. Tinga dam in Bondo district
  • Kodera forest rehabilitation and a tree nursery
  • Tree planting in Gucha, Kisii working with youth groups to develop community tree nurseries
  • Tree nurseries in Rongo and Lichota to rehabilitate banks of river Riana and tobacco curing
  • Integrated fish farming in Kibos, Borabu and Rongo for fingerlings production
  • Dam, water pans and canal distillation in Nyando, Tinga in Bondo and Milando in Karachuonyo
  • Promotion of rain-fed rice
  • Solar Lighting Kits and Energy saving jikos
  • Solar Cooker International, promoting use solar energy cooking kits and energy saving jikos in Nyando and Kisumu
  • Promoting Energy Saving Jikos and Tree Planting Programme among communities in Kisumu West by Okoa Kuni
  • Lake Victoria Environnent Management Programme - Projects implementation includes afforestation programme, wetland conservation, water pollution control and gully rehabilitation / soil erosion control
