Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Chennai encourages and promotes Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the Chennai region by collaborations on the local level and by setting up key initiatives for the region such as forums, training, skills development and youth engagement programmes. Chennai, also known as Madras, is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, the southern state of India. Although Chennai has a high literacy rate, sustainable development in the education sector and unemployment are among the major challenges that the region encounters. Urbanization is another challenge which paves way to various environmental issues such as air, water and land pollution. The lack of water supply dominates the problem of poor water quality in the city thereby ignoring the importance of water, sanitation, health and hygiene (WASH) topics. Urbanization also makes waste management a huge challenge. Another major problem that the people face is related to safety. Chennai records the highest number of road accidents compared to any other metropolis in India, road safety has become the first priority among safety issues.

Goals and Objectives:

RCE Chennai aims to:

  • engage stakeholders in discussions through forums, workgroups, seminars and photo competitions

  • educate young children on life skills and sustainable development through life skills training
