Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE North East works in collaboration with existing projects and networks to transform education across our region, and in doing so aims to foster economic regeneration. We wish to identify good practice in education across the North East and acknowledge and commend it so as to better articulate what the global concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) means in practice. RCE North East is intended as an inclusive, regional movement to meet the challenges, needs and drivers of the Twenty First Century. We intend to create opportunities for everyone to experience a learning environment beyond the classroom, as an essential part of their personal development, and as a means of building their capacity to make a contribution to society, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.

Goals and Objectives:

Vision:

  • Engender a sustainable approach to social and economic development in the North East of England that takes full account of the impacts of these developments on the urban, rural and coastal environment.
  • Provide local people with the knowledge and support needed to effect changes in their own lives by raising their awareness and understanding of sustainability and the need to protect the natural resource base. A particular focus will be to work with young people on issues of environmental justice, social responsibility and stewardship.
  • Create the opportunity for every person to experience a learning environment beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.
  • Contribute to regional development and economic regeneration.
  • Ensure a sustained commitment to ESD through a flexible management structure combined with a robust system of governance.

We believe that the best way of delivering this vision is through a broad and inclusive partnership of regional stakeholders engaged in promoting the region’s future through new forms of education and research.
