Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area : 
Student leadership in sustainability cannot be achieved single handed by single stakeholders. Collaboration proves a strategic avenue to develop students’ leadership in ESD. Therefore, inline with 21st century learning competencies, it is essential that students are empowered to collaborate and share their ESD knowledge at global level and specifically in this proposal at the Asia Pacific level. It is important that students in Penang play a leading role in ESD together with other students in Asia Pacific schools through RCE Centres in the Asia Pacific.
The program involved a series of discussion, presentations and online competition via video-conferencing focusing on Education for Sustainable Development with three themes that are Sustainable Consumption and Production, Biodiversity and Climate Change. This program provide a collaboration opportunities for students in Penang, Korea, Bangladesh, Indonesia and India to share and exchange ideas on sustainability related to the specific themes.

Rationale: 
RCE Penang is a United Nations recognised Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) that works in partnership with key stakeholders to bring about change for sustainability at the community level. Our network includes partners from the voluntary, public, education and business sectors, who work together to develop and implement innovative ESD projects and programmes in Penang. RCE Penang as one of the Asia Pacific RCEs has the platform to offer student in Penang to network with students in other countries specifically in Korea, Indonesia, Bangladesh and India. All the above RCE’s have given their support and commitment to participate in this program during the recent Asia Pacific RCE meetings in New Delhi India, November 2017. Students’ video presentations will be presented as a competition based on ESD content, Leadership initiatives and innovation. Further, students showcase will be documented as further resources in students’ initiative for leadership in ESD at Asia Pacific level.
Objectives: 
• To develop student leadership for building a sustainable society through education focus on the following themes which are Sustainable Consumption and Production, Biodiversity and Climate Change.
• To promote international partnership as a mean of developing student leadership in ESD
• To create leaders who are able to transform their knowledge for a sustainable society
• To empower students to be the leaders in promoting ESD

Lessons learned: 
. Not all schools in the participating RCEs could take part on the given date. For example, RCE Goa students celebrate teachers day on 5th September. Therefore, the team has uploaded the recorded webinar sessions on YouTube and put the link on RCE Penang’s website. This gives students opportunities to view the webinar later at their own time.
2. Timing of competition is important, early of the year is better timing rather than November: students and teachers is are busy with exam
3. Will engage RCEs in Asia Pacific through United Nation University.
4. To budget for publication of compiled videos for common learning sharing
5. To include primary school participation in the future.
Key messages:
