The Dajopen Waste Management Project aims at tackling the Socioeconomic and Environmental conditions of vulnerable communities through community based waste management strategy. The strategy is implemented through collection of waste materials for production of recycled items and the training of other self-help groups and actors regarding alternative livelihood opportunities, waste management and organic farming. The project focuses on the environmental, social and economic challenges in Kitale and replicated in other parts of Kenya. It aims at contributing to a cleaner town and preservation of the environment in a comprehensive manner, where Fauna and Flora can thrive.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses: 
The project is guided by the Millennium Development Goal 7 that focuses on the promotion of Sustainable Development. Therefore, with a purpose of addressing the environmental sustainability, Dajopen Waste Management collects and recycles waste matter in an environmental friendly approach. As we continue to industrialize and develop, garbage and other wastes materials emitted from households and dumping sites, factories etc are pollutant to the environment. This project advocates for green energy, food security, climate change mitigation and enterprises development both to rural and the less privileged urbanities (slums dwellers). On energy, we make and train the slums dwellers how to use briquettes’ recycled from pulp papers and dry tree leaves thus they stop depending on wood charcoal. This alternative source of fuel will lessen the destruction of forest thus mitigating the climate change. The use of organic fertilizer from the recycled biodegradable waste matter has increased crop yield thus boosting food security.

The Education shared goes to many parts of the world, due to the fact , the students comes from different parts of this Orb. The materials are needed to enhance more people to join the sector. Socially the project contributes to an improvement in the health conditions of community member as a result of the reduction in the presence of vermin, the contamination of soils, water streams air flooding and fire hazards. It also enhances the social, economic and environmental conditions of vulnerable groups-including women (who undertake 80 per cent of the work) youth street families and small scale farmers thereby helping reduce social in equalities. the project has been accepted by the community thus giving it an upper hard for its continuity members productive skills, encourages collective productivity and acts as catalyst of greater community co-operation, whilst allowing vulnerable community members to contribute positively to the broader environment, geography economy and society. It covers and it can cover any urban geographical area thus leaving a good and cleaner environment.
- To utilize bio-degradable municipal solid waste (yard waste, roadside, market, restaurants, institutional, carpentry, sawmill etc.) to organic fertilizer for enterprise development, food security, energy use, and climate change mitigation
- To advocate for and Support development of 3Rs (Re-use, Re-cycle, Reduce) implementation plans targeting all the residents of Urban and Peri-Urban citizens
- To reduce the quantity of overall solid waste resulting in lower expenditures for local government to collect and dispose of solid waste.
- Creating jobs to the ever increasing World population.
Activities and/or practices employed: 
Collecting and using garbage for economic purposes and in the process reduce municipal solid waste streams that can breed toxic materials and pathogenic organisms into the leachate of dumps and landfills thereby contaminating ground and surface water.

Employing aerobic composting of bio-degradable waste and thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants that would have emanated from mixed solid waste heaps and dumps as a result of anaerobic decomposition. The anaerobic process is a significant source of methane gas in the atmosphere. In addition, by our action, we reduce the traditional practice to burn garbage in residential areas and in landfills, which is normally used to reduce volume of garbage. Burning creates thick smoke that contains carbon monoxide, soot and nitrogen oxide, all of which is hazardous to human health and degrades urban air quality and can be avoided.

Prevent solid waste dumping into waterways; drainage systems, streams and rivers that tend to alter aquatic habitats and harm native plants and animals. Solids can also cause sedimentation and change stream flow and bottom habitat, which may significantly damage these valuable natural resources and the services they provide.
Size of academic audience: 
Currently we are estimating to be 63,000 farmers including interns from local and international high learning institutions who are seconded to the projects for practical experience.
The expected results and impact is measured by the increase of wealth created by the beneficiaries, e.g. better housing for the slum dwellers, life expectancy and increased crop yield to the small scale farmers. Also, good proceed for members and non members has increased. Therefore even the government will be able to collect enough tax, because the people wealth has increased. Also expected to come as tangible results is the increments of the people who will be working under this industry national and internationally. Employment and wealth will be created through this noble idea for this and other generations to come. Finally most people will have a bread on their table earned from the recycling of waste-(Surely waste is wealth and can keep your wallet health)
Lessons learned: 
What we have learned is that this activity has prevented the unpleasant odor and unattractive appearance of piles of uncollected solid waste along streets and in fields, forests and other natural areas, which can discourage tourism and the establishment and/or maintenance of businesses. The members of the group by getting the dividends from the sales of their products. People has benefitted by having something to do and earn a leaving from eg,
The youth, women, street families and men, by getting direct and indirect employment.
The slum dwellers whose environment will be healthier and more habitable
Kitale Town Council whose cost of waste management and maintenance of landfills and dumping site will have been reduced
Key messages: 
Most of the people are not lazy, but they lack something to do , thus rendering them to be beggars. On the environmental, social and economic challenges we need each person to be on board, SO THAT WE MAY CLEAN OUR ENVIRONMENT TOGETHER AND LEAVE A LEGACY TO THE COMING GENERATION.

Yes, we have won several Environmental Awards, and most of them do not have monetary awards, only recognitions and certificates, but for the NETFUND WE got monetary.
