Minna is a city (estimated population 304,113 in 2007) in west-central Nigeria. It is the capital of Niger State, one of Nigeria's 36 federal states. It consists of 2 major ethnic groups: the Nupe and the Gbagyi. The major activities of the local people is farming and hunting. Minna is about 150km to the capital city of Nigeria.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
As part of RCE Minnas continuous drive to encourage sustainable tree planting methods as a means of reducing and combating the effect of climate change which is in line with Goal 13 of the SDGs,the centre developed a sustainable hole digging methodology which will aid the survival of plants as against the traditional practice of the digging thats is haphazardly done without concern for the survival of the seedlings. In order to change the tradition and to provide a very practical and easy to follow procedure, RCE Minna developed a four and half (4.5) minutes documentary on the various steps to follow when digging holes and planting tree seedlings. This is to reduce the effect of unsustainable planting techniques and the shock seedlings are exposed to during planting.

Rationale:
As part of RCE Minnas continuous drive to encourage sustainable tree planting methods as a means of reducing and combating the effect of climate change which is in line with Goal 13 of the SDGs,the centre developed a sustainable hole digging methodology which will aid the survival of plants as against the traditional practice of the digging thats is haphazardly done without concern for the survival of the seedlings.
Objectives:
The main objective of the project is to avoid the lost of trees planted and increase the survival rate of trees.
Activities and/or practices employed:
A video of four and half minutes have been developed, detailing the steps to be followed when e digging and planting seedlings. The specification was done for seedlings that are between the heights of 1.5m to 3m tall. The video contained a back explanation of the various step and a footage of RCE Minna members conducting the process as the voice over explains.

Results:

Lessons learned:
The major outcome is that this same approach of sustainable hole digging and planting methodology have been adopted for a project implemented by RCE Minna tagged School Empowerment and Nutritional Supplementation through Agriculture (SENSA). At the moment over 2000 trees have been planted and are currently surviving using the same methodology.
