Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

In response to the UNU call for development of regional networks, RCE Greater Pwani was established on 12th November 2010 in a workshop that was attended by key stakeholders from the Coastal region. RCE Greater Pwani was established with the aim of addressing sustainable development challenges within the coastal region of Kenya. The RCE is hosted by Pwani University College, located at Kilifi Town, about 65 km from Mombasa City. Pwani University was appointed to host RCE Greater Pwani, as it is strategically placed, with the necessary capacity and expertise to take the leading role in coordinating the RCE Greater Pwani network and spearheading the regional ESD activities.

The coastal region of Kenya extends from the southeastern tip at Vanga to the lower part northeastern province up to Ijara district that comprises the rich and productive biodiversity. It extends to the hinterland, bordering Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado on the western flank of the country. The region covers an area of about 83,603 km² and has a population of 3,325,307 inhabitants (2009 census). Coastal region include Coast province (Kwale, Msambweni, Kinango, Taita Taveta, Kaloleni, Kilindini, Mombasa, Kilifi, Malindi, Tana River and Lamu districts), Ijara district of North eastern province and Kenyan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the 200 nautical miles into the Indian Ocean.

Goals and Objectives:

Vision:
A leading RCE in advancing Education for Sustainable Development activities in Kenya.

Goal:
To promote Sustainable Development through capacity building, partnership, education and training for the Kenya coastal communities.

Short term objectives:

  • Carry out a participatory assessment of the achievement of GAP for ESD in the coast and identify stakeholders, local challenges, opportunities, priorities and existing capacity for ESD in the region
  • Establish networks, partnerships and resources for implementation of ESD in Coast Kenya
  • Identify, promote and adapt GAP for ESD best practices

Long term objectives:

  • Create and promote awareness on GAP for ESD and to enhance active participation by stakeholders
  • Develop materials and tools for implementing GAP for ESD in the region
  • Establish a regional information system to document and disseminate best practices and deliver effective ESD programmes to the local community
  • Improve the livelihoods of communities in the coastal region
  • Promote sustainable practices through ESD
